We get versions of these questions constantly — in DMs, in emails, and in reviews after the fact. Here they are, answered up front, before you buy, instead of after.

Is this okay for fine or thin hair?

Yes — with two adjustments: use less than the full suggested amount, and apply as an overnight leave-in rather than a daytime product. Fine hair shows product weight more easily than thicker or coarser textures, so timing and amount matter more than which product you choose. We wrote a full guide on exactly how to adjust your routine for fine hair — see "Why 'Less Is More' for Fine Hair."

Why does my scalp flake more in the first week or two?

This is a known and common adjustment period — sometimes called scalp purging — not a sign something is wrong. As buildup releases from the scalp, it can look worse briefly before it looks better. If flaking continues well beyond a couple of weeks or comes with ongoing irritation, that's worth a closer look — see our guide on Dandruff vs. Seborrheic Dermatitis vs. Dry Scalp, or reach out to us directly and we'll help you troubleshoot.

What does it actually smell like?

Honestly: herbal, and noticeable, especially in the first few uses — that's the botanical ingredients, not added fragrance. Our Fragrance-Free variant has no added fragrance, though it does contain a touch of vanilla extract and orange oil to freshen it up naturally — so "fragrance-free" means no added perfume, not completely scentless. Scent softens with wear but doesn't fully disappear. If you're sensitive to strong scents, start with the Fragrance-Free option. Scent is the single most-discussed feature in our customer reviews — we'd rather you know exactly what to expect before you order than be surprised after.

My scalp feels dry and oily at the same time — is that normal?

Yes, and it's more common than you'd think. A lot of people assume "dry" and "oily" are opposites, but a scalp can be flaky and tight in some areas while producing extra oil in others — often at the same time. That combination is one of the most frequent things customers describe to us. Products built around one extreme — only for "oily scalp" or only for "dry scalp" — often don't address it.

Can I use this with braids, twists, locs, or a silk press?

Yes — our leave-in and oil formulas are designed to be lightweight enough for protective styles, not just loose hair. Apply directly to the scalp between sections rather than saturating the hair itself, and use a lighter hand than you would on fully loose hair.

Can I buy this for someone else — my kid, my partner, a family member?

Yes, and a lot of our customers do exactly that. It's common for one person to find relief first and then order for a parent, spouse, or child dealing with the same thing. If you're buying for someone else, consider starting with the Fragrance-Free variant if you're not sure about their scent preferences, and check in on their hair type and fine-hair needs using the guidance above.

Is this the same as the product I've seen mentioned in old reviews under a different name?

Some of our current products were previously sold under earlier naming — for example, "Good Biome" naming on select products has been updated to our current YeastDefense® branding. The formulas and product lines are continuous; only the names and labels have been updated over time. If you're ever unsure whether a review or older mention matches a current product, reach out and we'll confirm.

Do I need the shampoo, conditioner, oil, AND the leave-in solution — all of it?

Not necessarily. Start with the smallest routine that addresses what's actually bothering you — usually the leave-in Scalp Solution on its own, or the shampoo + conditioner pair if you're also looking to change how you cleanse. Add the oil as a sealing step later if you want extra moisture lock-in, especially for protective styles. We'd rather you start small and build up than buy more than you need.
